THE WEDDING RING

ALL HIS BAGS WERE PACKED, READY TO GO,
THE ECSTACY QUITE VISIBLE, ALTHOUGH HE DIDN’T MEAN TO SHOW.
THE LOVE OF HIS LOVE, SHE WAS WAITING,
MERELY A WEEK NOW FOR THE GRAND AFFAIR,
AH SO ROMANTIC! LOVE WAS IN THE AIR.
AS PROMISED, HE WOULD BRING HER THE WEDDING RING.

HE DREAMT OF THE DAYS TO COME,

SOULMATES FOR LIFE THAT THEY WOULD BECOME.
DREAMS, AS THEY SAY ARE NOT MEANT TO BE TRUE,
UP CAME THE COMMANDER, WHO HAD HIM BECKONED,
DUTY CALL IT SEEMS, WAR EMERGENCY HAD DAWNED.
DESTINY HAD SOME OTHER PLANS, LEAST HE COULD ARGUE.

LAY AWOKE THE TWO ALL NIGHT,
SEPARATED FROM EACH OTHER, SUCH WAS THEIR PLIGHT.
IN THE DISTANT, ONE COULD HEAR THE LADY BUG SING,
KISS ME AND HOLD ME TIGHT, SHE SAID,
PLEASE COME BACK BEFORE I’M LONG DEAD.
YOU PROMISED ME MY WEDDING RING.

EYES WITH TEARS, HEART FILLED WITH PRIDE,
OFF WENT THE SOLDIER TO FIGHT.
LOVE WAS HIS PRIORITY, MOTHERLAND NO LESS,
DON’T GO, SHE CRIED,
I HAVE TO, WAS WHAT HE REPLIED.
NOTHING SUCCEEDS LIKE SUCCESS.

SHE HELD THE VISION WITH GRACE,
HER HAIR SOFT ON HIS FACE.
HIS LIPS PRESSED AGAINST HERS,
EVERYTIME, SHE CLOSED HER EYES, HE WAS THERE,
THIS TIME IT WAS SURREAL, SHE BLINKED WITH FEAR.
THE CHOREOGRAPHED CONFUSION OF A REAL FARCE.
